The score of Oteland Suite was discovered among John Barton Armstrong’s many unpublished works and papers after his death in 2010.
In 1961, as it is noted in his catalogue as the date of composition, Barton Armstrong was preparing to leave his position at Vickers Armstrong (by then the British Aircraft corporation) and pursue composing and writing full time.
He was living in Weybridge, close to which is Oatlands Palace. It is therefore very possible that this Oteland Suite had some connection in the composer’s mind to the former Tudor and Stuart royal palace which took the place of the former manor of the village of Oatlands, near Weybridge.
Interestingly, excavations of the palace took place in 1964 to rediscover its extent, so possibly strong local interest was apparent in 1961. The score has been faithfully copied, with just a few minor editorial changes which have mostly been indicated in the score by way of edit brackets and footnotes.
