This piece dates from 1970 and is directly inspired by John Barton Armstrong’s residence in South America. Mato Grosso is literally translated as ‘thick bush’. It covers an area of 903,357 square kilometers, yet contains only 1.66% of Brazil’s population. It contains three main ecosystems: the Cerrado, the Pantanel and the Amazon rainforest.
Mato Grosso is one of a group of three pieces written by John Barton Armstrong celebrating South American landmarks. The other two are Coricancha and Orinoco.
